GitHub Proxies for Development Workflows
GitHub proxies give development teams controlled egress for CI, dependency access, and allowlisted workflows without hiding abusive automation.
Common approved uses
- Give CI runners a stable outbound IP for an allowlist.
- Route package downloads through a monitored organizational gateway.
- Reproduce a regional network or DNS issue in a controlled test.
- Centralize connection logs without storing repository secrets in them.
Configure Git and tooling explicitly
Use the proxy settings supported by Git, your package manager, or your CI platform. Scope configuration to the process that needs it, verify certificate handling, and remove temporary settings after troubleshooting. Avoid disabling TLS verification.
Protect tokens and respect rate limits
Keep personal access tokens and app credentials in a secret manager, use the smallest required permissions, and follow GitHub API rate limits. Cache dependency artifacts where permitted instead of multiplying requests. A proxy must not be used to conceal credential abuse, scanning, or policy violations.
For stable automation egress, compare datacenter proxy plans and read the enterprise proxy security guide.
